Cell Phone and Electronics Policy

St.  John Paul II Collegiate recognizes that we are living in a digital world and that part of our role as educators is to teach students how to use electronics responsibly.  Cell phones are a communication tool between parents and their children for many families. We aim to monitor the use of electronics at school so these devices will not be a distraction in the classroom and hallways.

The cell phone and electronics policy at St. John Paul II Collegiate is as follows:

Cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, earbuds, headphones and other electronic devices may not be used by students during the school day. In rare cases, teachers may grant students access to these devices for educational purposes only. These devices are to be stored in backpacks or lockers at all other times, including breaks.

If this expectation is not adhered to, the following process will be followed:

  1. students will be given a verbal warning
  2. if this occurs a second time, the electronic device will be confiscated by the teacher for the remainder of the class
  3. if this occurs a third time, the electronic device will be confiscated by the teacher for a period of time during the day and parent contact will be made
  4. if this occurs a fourth time, the electronic device will be confiscated by the teacher and administration will become involved

This policy is in effect when inside the building.

There are phones in every classroom in the school in case of an emergency.  Any message that needs to be passed from parent to student, or vice-versa, can be done through the front office. If it is imperative that a student check their electronic device for an important message from a parent/guardian, the student must get permission from a teacher or the front office.  Students have lockers which, if used properly, will keep their cell phone and/or electronic device safe while they are in class.  It is strongly recommended, but not mandatory, that students keep all electronics in their lockers. The school does not accept responsibility for items that are lost or stolen. strongly recommended, but not mandatory, that students keep all electronics in their lockers.
